Years ago I interviewed former MVP Hank Sauer over the phone.
I asked him how he got his nickname, “The Honker.”
Sauer laughed, as did his wife Jeanne in the background.
“Have you seen me?!?” he finally said.

Lefty O’Doul, a heck of a ballplayer and a key figure in popularizing baseball in Japan, got a vibrant new monument at his gravesite this morning. The Bay Area chapter of SABR and the @sfgiants.com played key roles in this tribute to a San Francisco legend.

Art Schallock got a proper memorial celebration for his 100 years of life. He had been the oldest ex-MLB player before his death on March 6, and his tribute featured a jersey signed for him by the 2024 Yankees.
Of course, hot dogs, Cracker Jack and beer were on the menu at the Sonoma Grille.
