“I have listened to many ingenious persons, who say we are better off now than we ever were before. I do not know how well of we were before; but I know positively that many very deserving persons of my acquaintance have great difficulty in living under these improved circumstances:”

1/2 It’s a grand day today! Went to Leeds to get my copy of ‘Stone & Sky’ the latest in the ‘Rivers of London’ series from @benaaronovitch.bsky.social And am now spending the afternoon reading it. Almost half-way through & enjoying it immensely - as inventive as ever & filled with those touches…

Book 11 of 2025 - devoured in a single sitting (the joys of a bank holiday weekend). ‘Masquerade’ was the second single I ever bought & #TheSkids have always been one of my favourite bands. This book focuses on Richard’s years with the band when he was only a teenager - written with integrity!

1/2 Book 10 of 2025, ‘Lively Arts’ by Martin Popoff, a track by track guide to the work of #TheDamned As someone without any musical talent or knowledge, I really enjoy someone explaining what it is I’m hearing.

The always brilliant Thirsk Yarn Bombers have excelled themselves this time with two brilliant installations. This one against litter…

When we bought our house, we wondered why the previous owners had planted a silver birch in the small back yard - this spring we know why!

In Paris for a #Gaskell conference & came across this announcement - I’m sure there’s a witty caption about lack waiting to be attached to this sign!

Book 9 of 2025 is a fascinating insight into the thought of British left-libertarianism in the early days of the Bolshevik Revolution. Ergatocracy was never going to catch on as a team though!

Book 8 of 2025: for cricket-loving punks (like me), this book has a brilliant premise - the ghosts of Gene Vincent & W.G.Grace return to London in 1976 to ensure that the Clash & I.V.A. Richards realise their greatness. A brilliant premise but, alas, rather unevenly executed.

Doesn’t look like much, but I’m hoping that in a few weeks time I will have some broad bean seedlings to admire. I also put in some spinach seeds too. It’s so good to feel my hands in compost once more!

Book 7 of 2025, an absolutely enthralling, compelling and moving fictionalisation of the life and times of Stan Laurel. It also offers a fascinating history of comedy in Hollywood but crucially absolutely convinces as a novel.
