They assassinated Black Republican politicians and intimidated Black voters from exercising their voting rights. After they gained back political power, they ended Reconstruction and the government gave back the plantations to the original slave owners.

These families and the Antebellum political class formed the group, “The Redeemers” where the goal was to spread white supremacy and stop reconstruction. They strategically encouraged and organized acts of violence across the south to take power back from Black Americans.
