Recovering from the corporate consumerism cult by supporting independent artists, becoming less wasteful, and increasing self-sufficiency with creativity.

👍 Being loud, supporting people, looking good. 👍

I have a big interest in talking to #Etsy defectors - people who once used Etsy to sell their handmade goods, but have since left due for reasons like community culture, algorithm beefs, and/or predatory fees.

I would love to hear from any #handmade #makers who have left Etsy! Tell me your story!
i think it's fair to say that we, as a collective, have given corporations *way* too much power and presence in our daily lives. it's time to show them that we don't need them & start using our skills to take care of each other

Lycra is beginning to experiment with corn-based textiles, Adidas & Hermes are testing out mushroom leather, but we know that the real sustainable ingenuity has always come from independent designers like Caroline Zimbalist.
A designer dressed Chappell Roan with seaweed. But don't expect to find the approach in stores — yet
Fast fashion relies heavily on synthetic fibers that are made from oil and gas, fossil fuels that cause climate change.

Boosting this request to talk to #Etsy defectors today after several shops threatened or went through with closing their doors last night upon discovering "Alligator Alcatraz" merch being offered on the platform.

Please get in touch with if you're down to tell me your Etsy woes! #handmade #etsyshop

Tailored Union, a sock company that partnered with indie artists to create capsule collections of beautifully designed socks, has decided to close its doors. :( I found them too late - but not too late to get 50% off of their remaining stock!

I've been wanting to try my hand at sashiko, a Japanese visible mending technique. Using a kit from Socorro Society on TikTok, I finally finished my first patch on the elbow of my denim jacket. It took around 4 hours I think. I'm really happy with it. Nice to try new things.

🐝🍯 The Honeybee Bandana has arrived in studio, screenprinted to perfection, with bees and mānuka flowers in vermilion red across a turmeric backdrop.

The original artwork for this design took over 60 hours of detailed handdrawing, and I'm so pleased with how it turned out. pepperraccoon.com

I wrote about those TikToks from Chinese factories that claim to "cut out the middleman" for Lululemon, Birkenstocks, and more. They're designed to entice US shoppers who are nervous about tariffs and used to low prices. Most claims are also probably bullshit.

Excellent piece today by @amyodell.bsky.social in her BackRow substack (a must-follow IMO) on greenwashing, GenZ's interest in ethical consumerism, & the lack of data backing up big brands' sustainability claims. amyodell.substack.com/p/how-sustai...

How 'Sustainable' Fashion Became a Nightmare for Consumers
With little regulation, brands are free to market their clothes as sustainable, making it increasingly challenging for shoppers to know what actually is.

I was shocked and disappointed to learn this week that Vancouver Fashion Week is showcasing SHEIN... not as a threat to our planet with its overproduction and ever-growing climate impact. .

NOPE....Vancouver Fashion Week is featuring SHEIN as a DESIGNER.
Speechless.
Seriously.
WTF.

The most sustainable clothes (and really everything)? Stuff that already exists! And one part of REDUCE REFUSE RESIST (and tbh the entire slow fashion way of life) is shopping secondhand first! Meaning: looking for something secondhand first, before buying it brand new.
