What lies ahead is not fascist or single-party dictatorship but competitive authoritarianism—a system in which parties compete in elections but the incumbent’s abuse of power tilts the playing field against the opposition.

The one thing Trump does care about is the stock market.

And markets are about to tumble hard from his foolish play to take America back a century

The question is whether Canada’s response is smart enough to turn these financial flow screws harder.

Threats aside, Vance is also just full of shit. The U.S. seized 19kg of fentanyl at the Canadian border last year, or 0.19 percent of the total fentanyl seized.

Meanwhile, in 2023, Canada seized 27,000 prohibited weapons at the border. The U.S. seized 459 weapons coming from Canada.
This is unbecoming of anyone serving in elected office. There’s also a logical conclusion to his “three ways of stopping this,” and it’s absolutely fucking insane.

If you missed it, here’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s, quite sincerely, historic speech. It’s for, and is galvanizing, Canadians but he also speaks very directly to our allies in the US. Please hear us out.
I do find myself thinking how much I’d give up, and do, for this imperfect country.

Here is the data on fentanyl caught at US borders. The yellow line (Canada) is close to zero because the numbers are so small (50 lbs last year vs some 20,000 lbs from Mexico).
