This day in NASCAR history:

Richard Petty clinched his seventh and final Winston Cup championship by a mere 11 points over Darrell Waltrip at the LA Times 500 held at Ontario Motor Speedway. Petty finished fifth that day while Benny Parsons won the race.

This day in IndyCar history:

CART held its 2002 season finale in Mexico City. The race was won by Kenny Brack. It marked the end of an era, as Honda and Toyota left the series for the IRL, which forced Chip Ganassi Racing and Team Green to depart as well. CART would declare bankruptcy in 2003.

This day in NASCAR history:

On November 16,2008; Jimmie Johnson clinched his third straight Cup series title en route to winning five in a row, and seven championships in total during his career. Jimmie Johnson, Richard Petty, and Dale Earnhardt are the only drivers to have won seven titles.
