Freight trains from China to Europe via Russia need about 12–16 days. 19000 fright trains per year males an average of 30–50 trains per day making this trip.

The closure is very symbolic. Russian trains cannot run directly into Europe. They use broad gauge (1,520 mm), while Poland uses standard gauge (1,435 mm). Usually at Belarus–Poland border, in Brest, trains are adapted: freight is reloaded or bogies are changed before continuing into Europe.

Such a rail backlog is hard to clear. Russia would face a choice: either halt new trains from China at the border or send back those stuck inside the network. Otherwise, immobile trains risk paralyzing hubs and slowing domestic and transit freight alike.

Russia’s rail network is vast but busy with energy and raw material freight. Extra Chinese transit adds strain at borders and hubs.

With low estimated 30 China–Europe trains entering Russia daily and each trip taking 12–16 days, some 350+ trains are on Russian tracks at once. If none can exit but new ones keep coming, a backlog builds up, straining rail hubs and risking congestion across the network.

A few days ago, on Sept 12, 2025, Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey joined ECO to revive the Istanbul-Tehran-Islamabad rail corridor. Monthly freight trains on the 6,540 km route will cut trade time by a third versus sea transport and enhance regional connectivity.

Interestingly, in Feb 2025 the Russia-bypass route was revived as the first freight train from China reached Iran under a $400B China-Iran deal. The southern corridor halves transit time, strengthens trade, and helps bypass sanctions.

Some parts of the Russian Far East historically belonged to China. Outer Manchuria (外满洲) includes Primorsky Krai (home to Vladivostok), Khabarovsk Krai and Amur Oblast.

Problem: United States is the largest LNG supplier to the EU, representing almost 50% of total LNG imports. To stand on its own Europe needs to be independent here.
