Speaking of gays in Washington, G-Man, by Berverly Gage, is an excellent biography of J. Edgar Hoover. The book deals with Hoover’s contradictions: a masculine archetype and a closeted gay man, a committed public servant and a ruthless authoritarian.

In honor of Pride, I can’t recommend Secret City, by James Kirchick, highly enough. The book chronicles American history through the lens of gay Washington from the 1930s to 1990s. If you ever wondered whether Reagan was controlled by a “homosexual ring”, this is the summer read for you.

I’m obsessed with the midrises in Condesa, CDMX.

I took this last week as I was heading to the airport.

Dallas needs a big, brutalist metro.

I also feel like I would vote Labor. I do like that you can see the position on the quadrant. 🤷‍♂️

2 hours spent walking around downtown Dallas, and I snapped this photo of 211 N Ervay. This turquoise tower is one of my favorites.

I love my neighborhood. Oak Cliff, Dallas, Texas.

Contemporary architects, especially those building social housing, are riffing on Haussmann’a form.

These classic buildings and their sloped roofs created attic space for servants’ quarters. Building heights were measured from the cornice - the molding just beneath the roofline. This meant that sloped roofs allowed for additional, if cramped, accommodations in the attic.

Spent more time exploring downtown Dallas this year. Two of my favorite pics: Thanks-Giving Square looking up at Republic Bank Tower and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Also wild that the state of Texas has one underground subway station and it’s 120 feet underneath a neighborhood *adjacent* to downtown.

Yep. The tunnel runs between Pearl/Arts District and Cityplace station. Not across downtown.

Regional S-Bahn could even be complemented with @walkabledfw.bsky.social plans for a series of tramways focused on downtown. Dallas deserves the freedom to move.

I dream of a rapid regional metro system for North Texas, like @rmtransit.bsky.social highlighted in Delhi, but S-Bahn style regional rail with clean and frequent light-rail vehicles is more realistic. DART should shift the Pearl Ave transit mall below ground and ramp up frequency.
December 29, 2024 at 11:39 PM
North Texas needs an S-Bahn. The region is sprawling, and we’re spending too much time stuck on highways that encroach further into our neighborhoods. DART is too slow and the TRE between Dallas and Fort Worth runs old trains infrequently and not at all on weekends. We can do better.

I’m a happy little urbanist exploring Hoboken, NJ. The sidewalks are wide, most intersections have bump outs, drivers actually stop at crosswalks, and there are bike lanes everywhere.

Fascinated by this article about pro-life and pro-gun Democrats elected to the House in 2006. The author frames the presence of conservative Dems as a liability, but Democrats wouldn’t have had a majority in 2006 without these members. www.theguardian.com/world/2006/n...

Would this not be more accurate?

@rmtransit.bsky.social I really enjoyed your video on Atlanta a few months back. Any thoughts on how Dallas might build a functional rail system? Seems like we might have a lot to learn from Calgary? And maybe someday, we might aspire to Frankfurt?

Lake Cliff Park also looks out onto this beauty: Lake Cliff Tower, built in 1929. One of Dallas' less-noticed treasures.
