LM Studio is the program I use, but Ollama is also a solid choice. Both provide everything you need to run models locally. AI is a useful tool, but only if it is democratised.

Personally, my current go-to is IBM Granite 4. I just installed the open source model and then equipped it with scripts for DuckDuckGo web search. It does everything I need without burning the environment as it only has access to the power my computer provides.

16GB of RAM is enough to run your own instance of DeepSeek R1. Llama, Granite, and Qwen are happy with 8GB. A little tech knowledge is all it takes to give access to web search, and at that point there’s really no reason to give any business to the tech groups that are burning the world for profit.
