‘Don't you imagine the leaves think how comfortable it will be to touch the earth instead of the nothingness of air’

'Song of Autumn' by Mary Oliver

I just finished this watercolor of Fall leaves hanging over a still lake. Fall is such a wonderful season,as we enjoy the last heavenly show of color

I painted this watercolor after a recent visit to the Petrified Forest in Arizona. What a surreal, otherworldly place. We were the only people there and it was so quiet and devoid of life. My lasting impression was the open blue sky and the blue and purple stripes of the hills.

When everything around us is confusing, angry and frustrating, look up to the sky at night and feel the peace. We are but grains of sand in this infinite universe and all things will pass.

Spent a happy afternoon painting birds. Swoon! These photos were taken at Flamingo Gardens, Davie, Ft Lauderdale. Peacocks, exotic ducks, Ibis…. Oh my! Heaven.

Floyd and Jane Wray’s 1930’s home.Davie, Ft Lauderdale.
The property was originally an orange grove, but it is now an award winning botanical garden with 15 ‘Champion’ trees. The largest of their species in Florida.
You can now tour the Wray’s beautifully preserved home. A trip back in time.

I’m still working on my Flamingo Garden’s pages. Loving painting the birds and tropical foliage. The cloth like texture of the paper is a struggle. It’s like painting on a fibrous dish cloth that absorbs quickly but takes ages to dry. Lots of rest stops and patience needed as it dries.

The sky is on fire. Watercolor sunset reflected in the lake. I love free flow watercolor, it’s so relaxing to just let the paint blend and surprise me.

I couldn’t wait to get started painting some of the sights from Flamingo Gardens, Davie, Fort Lauderdale. Such a beautiful place. Tropical and otherworldly. Well worth a visit.

Now for something completely different! I have mixed feelings about Al and its threat to creatives, but this watercolor was inspired by an Al artist I really admire. I would not be able to find a beautiful model, decorate her head with a crown of flowers and train a flock of birds to sit in her hair

‘Row, row, row your boat.
Far, far away’.
A stunning sunset on our favorite lake in Wisconsin. The lake as still as a mill pond, reflects the beauty of the sky above.

I’ve been continuing with my travel journal. It’s been fun being more sketchy in my method. The paper is very rough in texture so I’ve had to let go of some precision but that’s fun too. This painting captures some of the ‘billionaire’ homes that line the canals and shoreline in Fort Lauderdale.

There’s nothing like a beautiful sunrise over a sandy beach. It’s not often we get to see this magical sight. I painted this pink candy floss colored sunrise in memory of those I’ve seen and hope of many more to be enjoyed in the future. Enjoy.

The history of Fort Lauderdale started more than 4,000 years ago when the first aboriginal natives lived there and later the Tequesta Indians who lived there for over a thousand years. Now it has over 1,800 inhabitants. Shiny skyscrapers and luxury homes line the canals and mainland city.

We drove into Fort Lauderdale. It is a beautiful seaside city with over 1.8 million population. It has 23 miles of sandy beaches and a network of 165 miles of canals that give it the name,’Venice of America’.
Fort Lauderdale hosts an International boat show every year.

We have really been enjoying learning about Floridas rich past. St Austin’s lighthouse. The earliest wooden lighthouse was recorded in 1587 on Anastasia island. In 1737 it was replaced with a 30 ft tower made of coquina. ( shell/limestone) There a great views from the top.

I painted the Castillo de San Marcos in St Augustine,FL. A fascinating place to visit with great views of the town and port.
The fort was built in 1627 and took 23 years to finish. The original forts were built of wood and had to be replaced 9 times. The latest fort was made from stone.

We spent the weekend in Key West celebrating our joint birthdays and Valentine’s Day. Now I’m continuing my travel journey. Magnolia Avenue, St Augustine, FL. the most beautiful road in the USA. Old oaks lean over the road, giving shade. Spanish moss hangs from the branches. So other worldly.

I recently finished a crepe flower arrangement for my son and his girlfriend to complement a Western cowboy painting they purchased. The colors were warm and Fall flowers were my chosen subjects. It was fun to try a different season of colors for a change.

My daughter bought me a book about making crepe paper flowers. This art form used to be very popular and has experienced a huge resurgence of interest. Many new books have been written on the subject and they are so inspiring. I started to practice and eventually made all the flowers for her wedding

I was going to attempt a fresh post everyday from my watercolor travelogue, but enjoying visiting places gets in the way of painting! Lol. At least I’m taking lots of lovely photos for reference and maybe to use in bigger paintings when I return home. I’m still enjoying painting St Augustine though.

My children bought me a travel sketch journal which I’ve brought with me on vacation. I’ve never tried recording my travels in this way so I’m looking for ideas and inspiration. Meanwhile I finished my first page. Let’s see if I can keep this going.

I painted this watercolor to celebrate the rich 90 years my mother has lived and gave it to her on her birthday. She grew up in London in the Second World War, experiencing the bombing raids and rationing. You could say, ‘She’s seen a lot of things’ and lived a wonderful life. #Art #watercolor

When my wonderful mother turned 90 last year I decided to paint a watercolor of her on her special wedding day to Hugh. Portrait painting is still a new challenge to me, especially if you want to have a passing likeness to the person who commissioned it. Luckily mum loved it. She’s very forgiving.

‘Oh to be in England’ Robert Browning’s famous poem.

This watercolor captures the beautiful patchwork fields. A view I never get bored of. This is another attempt at loose watercolor inspired by one of my favorite artists. Not for sale, just to learn. #
