You don't own either a domain, is just a rental really. If you can't pay for it for some reason one year, it will be released, probably at a much higher price. I rather have a free email as a base, even if I use the one that I have a custom domain for.

Kind of, it's different to trust a big company instead of a particular person. I have had the same email since the creation of Gmail, free, and I can create another with a custom domain and configure it to forward all messages to the custom one or backward. Could be the same here.

Then you would depend on a third person that have control over your username and if they wanted to sell it to the best bidder, which makes it so much more risky. And probably expensive. So not ideal. But I get your point.

But there are limited domains names, and regular users don't even know what is a domain or DNS, also some domains are too expensive nowadays, the ones released going to be “Premium Domains”, and is not practical for most people.

I would rather that if you have a handle, it's yours in any server.

I know, it's home of the reasons that I'm not a fan of federation. It's too confusing to keep in mind who is the person accross the multiple servers, and have to remember which server is the one you want to reach.

It's more that one of the reasons that I want to get an account first here was to save my user handle, and my domain is not that short either, so it's not very convenient to release it, but maybe having both could be interesting.

If you use a domain as a handle you release your current handle? Or you keep both ways?
