And the smell. The citrus and spice combo of ginger and bergamot. It took other work too, but sitting down to write was becoming joyful. I was able to begin processing all the writing anxiety I started feeling in grad school and channel the little girl in me that wrote stories and poems. 5/7

Let me tell you, when I decided to wake up at 6am for morning writing sprints, the crackling wood wick was everything. The background music to my writing practice was a crackling fire. Yes, 6am was A LOT but I loved the feeling of accomplishment after my morning writing power hour) 4/7

This was Covid times so I had lots of time to learn about candle wax, vessels, and candle throws. I started experimenting and found myself excited to write as I centered my writing around a morning ritual of hot tea and one of my own candles. This is Rise and Write, my very first candle. 🕯️ 3/7

I actually started with puzzles,
but didn’t enjoy it. Then coloring, same thing. I got to candle-making after I started treating myself to candles when I met writing goals. Several gave me migraines. I pivoted to essential oils and candle-making. I started creating my own blends. 🥰 LOVED IT 2/7

Here's a link to a recent post I authored reacting to a digital discussion about the challenge of making our expectations apparent to students. I describe how making our expectations explicit can reduce faculty members' workload & offer a prompt faculty can use in their courses. Link in 1st comment!

My latest article “What It Means to Know: Gender Differences in How White Men and Women Justify Their Drug-Related Beliefs” is now 1st view at International Politics. I began this research while a postdoc at @PoliticsAtPenn so I’m thrilled for it to finally be out in the world!

Some good news: I recently won a research grant to support my work on community storytelling about place in the context of local decision making about land use and development. It’s taken time for people to understand my research agenda so this feels really rewarding! Can’t wait to write this book!

I’m super excited about my latest candle creation “Progress in Prose” for my new YCC Writing Focus Work Kit. Inspired by my cousin who loves peppermint and inspired me to embrace a journaling practice (it was a struggle!). I’m using this kit later this week during a writing retreat with friends!

And then, of course, the need for a complete vibe reset after those committee and department meetings 💀

And also having to dig deep to find all the grace while grading because, whew, pandemic teaching and learning gaps 😅

Coming up with clever names was the fun part…we all know about reviewer #2 (sigh)

Spent the morning making a batch of the candles I created w/ the academic grind in mind. My house smells like essential oils and it’s so relaxing. I initially created them for myself and my writing ritual w/ the goal to center the work + my well being. My friends/fam loved them & it became a thing.

One of my favorite 2024 discoveries thus far. I am so grateful for all the content creators emphasizing the importance of centering our wellbeing.

I’m grateful for a lot in 2023, including how I’ve been intentional about caring for myself. In my journey, I ended up creating a candle line and academic care kits that other academics could use to center their well being. I’m especially proud of the “better than reviewer #2” candle 😜.

I’m still reeling from successfully submitting a grant application yesterday. It was a year in the making 🙃. Last year I got Covid and was thrown off and I’ve just now circled back to this project, which will likely be a book. I’ve been clearing my research deck to get to this and I’m super excited!

The world is on fire and everything is terrible so my solution for recentering myself this weekend (aside from yoga) was taking my little cousin to her first high tea. I love that my mini me now knows that she loves peach scones and cucumber and dill cream cheese sandwiches. 🥰🥰

The last month has been so busy and my yoga practice started to waver. This morning I decided I was going to my kemetic class no matter what. To slow my mind and breathe deeply this morning for 90 minutes—it was a blessing! I fell asleep in my final mummy pose 😂😂.
