New week at SH, and in Reviews we open with a doozy: @shinjinidey.bsky.social on Paul Kincaid's Colourfields (@briardenebooks.bsky.social). Who doesn't love reading a critic on a critic?

So much to pick out in this really productive dialogue. But key: "Kincaid is attempting to apprehend a public."
Colourfields by Paul Kincaid
Colourfields is constituted by tensions inherent to the genre.

Welcome to another batch of 2025 SFF novellas not published by Tor! Please consider reading and nominating some of these books for the Hugo, in an effort to prevent a situation where the novella category becomes completely dominated by a single publisher.

The week in @strangehorizons.bsky.social reviews begins with the return of Paul Kincaid to our pages.

“Metallic Realms takes the form of nine stories written by members of [a fictional] group […] picture the work imagined by those who hate science fiction, [and] you wouldn’t be far off the mark.”
Metallic Realms by Lincoln Michel

Absolutely thrilled for @jordanscarroll.bsky.social, whose book is excellent and necessary. And always thrilling to see a book of criticism win in this category.
The #HugoAward for Best Related Work goes to Speculative Whiteness: Science Fiction and the Alt-Right, Jordan S. Carroll (University of Minnesota Press). “Insist that tomorrow belongs to everyone.”

If you have any interest in proper, well considered, and sharp criticism you should buy this. It’s also worth supporting publishers who support critics (and are not a Uni press).

We managed to add my writing desk to the auction! (thanks to my work studio kindly storing it for a few days). It's beautiful, beloved by cats, full of writer karma and suitably scuffed. It's where I wrote The Shining Girls & other novels, per this very glam, very old photo of me and my murder wall.
