He never considered what it actually meant to somebody. He never cared to consider the human element of what he dealt with. Emotions were something that got in the way of a good detective. Emotions were what led a person down a winding path of incorrect assumptions and confirmation bias rather than uncovering the truth about what was happening. Emotions were what made a person human.

So far this year I completed the goal of publishing my first book, Veiled Desires, through Amazon and have completed the prologue of my next book titled Grit and Ruin. My new goal is to keep up the momentum and see if I can get a chapter a month.

I would be lying to claim I wasn't the third. Something that I have learned is it doesn't matter how well I plot and outline, my characters can and will find a way off course to add another chapter.

That had gotten his attention. Asher was tempted to laugh and toss the man out, yet there was something in the way he presented himself that made him pause. Sylas was too stiff and too blunt, giving off the air of someone who was at the end of the line and had nowhere else to turn. He narrowed his eyes as he pulled a cigarette from the box on his desk, striking a match and watching the way the flickering of that small frame seemed to dance off of Sylas’ skin. It was likely a trick of the light, but still worth noting. “You heard right that I tend to take the lost causes. Tell me what I'm working with and we'll see what I can do. I trust you can pay up.” Asher said pointedly, giving a sharp nod at the chair across from his desk. “I can pay. It isn't much, but I have a few marbles on me and can pay more once she's out of the way.” Sylas assured as he slowly took the seat. “How much is not much?” Asher asked, quirking an eyebrow as he took a slow drag from the cigarette, allowing the sweet smoke of fayreroot to settle his nerves. “Fifteen marbles in my pocket. However, there are more in our safe at home. Once she's out of the way, they're yours,” Sylas assured firmly.

Whether cybernetics or mutations, Asher was certain of one thing and it was that the man standing before him was far from human. “I was looking for a Detective Meadows,” he said softly, a melodic lilt to his voice that reminded Asher of the old stories of sirens and other predatory creatures who used their words as weapons. “You found him. Now what can I do you for?” Asher asked, his own tone clipped and sharp. “You aren't the sort to beat around the bush. I can appreciate that,” he said softly, stepping forward as he offered his hand to shake before continuing, “My name is Sylas Brinley and I was hoping you might be able to help me with my wife.” Asher leaned back in his chair, the furniture creaking softly in protest as he eyed the offered hand in distaste without accepting it. Before, he would have at least begrudgingly done so despite any suspicions. Now, the point where his right arm turned from human flesh to cybernetics under the cover of his clothes gave a fierce ache. He watched as Sylas slowly lowered his hand once more, something between reluctance and shame crossing his features before it was reigned back in as though it had never been there in the first place.

There are many points in life where a single decision can change a person's entire trajectory. These defining moments were seldom ones that stood out at the time they presented themselves. Had Asher known that he was facing such a crossroads, then perhaps he might have turned left that evening.

Do you write linearly (i.e., chapter 1, then 2, then 3...) or do you write scene after scene after scene and put them together afterwards?

I’m the former, and can’t even begin to fathom the idea of being the latter, maybe because I’m a pantser.
