I'll be honest, I haven't seen it in ages but it is definitely strikingly different than the sequels. It is (mostly) a critique of American militarism but it is very comfortable with violence and the typical catch phrases of the era.

Acosta cut the deal (which was not just "lenient" it was illegal), which had to be signed off on by the Florida AG who just happened to be Pam Bondi. So the two people involved in the plea deal became part of Trump's inner circle. That's...quite a coincidence.

"They" have floated it. Some reporter asked if that was reason for cause and Trump said he thought so. The reporter was obviously prompted and doing their work for them.
