Yes, this is a recirculating hydroponic system. The nutrient solution is in a 44 gallon drum, buried behind the shed and is pumped up through the system and returns via gravity. We still get pests, just gotta manage them to minimise crop loss.

They are 20 litre drums (4 gallon?) the type with the tap fitting hole at the bottom. I cut the tops off and drill out the tap hole and fit a poly irrigation fitting to use it as the return hole to the reservoir. The drums are HDPE plastic which is food grade. I get them free or for a few dollars.

Yes, agreed I usually plant cucumber crops that overlap. It’s winter here now and will probably be too cold for another crop. Take care, happy growing.
