Record of the day is the 4x4 compilation on Up Records from (I think) 1995/6.
Four tracks each by Appendix Out, Tunic, Kilgore Trout and Brewster, and showcasing Alasdair Roberts at his most indie rock. A true fan favourite (for this fan)

I never thought my 2nd Grade kid would be bringing notices like this home from school.
That said, I’m incredibly grateful the city are proactively reaching out to support vulnerable families.

We’ve taken in a visitor who’s trying to decide if this will be their forever-home. It’s bitey with surprising attack but we’re bonding…

Album of the year 2024

This album landed in my life in December and totally disrupted my album of the year plans.
Ugandan lukeme player Ekuka Morris Sirikiti’s first studio album on Nyege Nyege Tapes is crucial stuff. It’s simultaneously urgent and hypnotic, and utterly, utterly beautiful.

Diving deep into Bleed by The Necks. This is some pretty sublime ambience, picked up on the back of some ace recommendations. I’m on my 3rd spin and don’t see this leaving my turntable today.

(Rare January treat of it being so light out that I can’t photograph the sleeve without mad reflections!)

Worlds of Possibility. Soundtracking my Wednesday with @thepastels.bsky.social’ Mobile Safari.
UK Domino version with bonus 7” and US Up version with alternative album art because I’m a goof.

RIP Ed Askew.
It was a real privilege to see him play at the Glad Cafe in Glasgow a decade or so ago. He and the Snock are the two greats of weird American folk. Transcendent stuff.

Songs: Ohia - Protection Spells. So great to revisit this old friend, having been given some long-overdue vinyl treatment. A mightily impressive collection of single-take improvised songs, as haunting, jarring and intense as anything else Molina has penned. Crucial stuff

Plugging this Spare Snare record for anyone embarking on a nostalgia-trip through the fringes of Dundee’s revered indie rock scene circa 1995

Havens was a strong Album of the Year contender last year amongst a strong set. I’m not relegate this from the top of my spinning pile just yet.

I managed to catch Alan Licht both solo and with Love Child at the tail end of last year. Run On reunion for 2025 please

Records of 2025, #1 & #2:
#1 is David Grubbs & Taku Unami’s collaboration on Empty Editions. Spellbinding pieces of electric guitar wizardry in the classic Grubbs style.
#2 is the criminally overlooked “lost” Velvet Underground lp. You know it already of course. Dug out the crates for Stephanie Says

Not that I necessarily need these songs on yet another format, but this new collection of stone cold classics on Vampire Blues has been a welcome trip through most of the best and none of the worst of Louis Barlow’s Acoustic Sentridoh

I caught the Louder Than You Think movie this weekend. A touching tribute to the mighty Gary Young and Pavement at their most powerful.
