I think that's a wildly inaccurate description of Orlok. He's involved in just a couple of jump-scares. What I see above all is a astoundingly well-done voice and presence combined with a very careful sense by the film-makers of when and what to visually reveal and what not to and how.

One point I somewhat agree with: Camera choreography's wunna my favorite things & while I love that in this film, I've seen that with some distance from it it feels a touch over-choreographed/over-coordinated and might have benefited from some more scenes where the camera just sat back and watched.

For myself I'd say all 3 feel a bit stiff for me for obvious Victorian reasons. But the Eggers considerably less so, largely due to Depp's performance (I find it awfully hard to see this in particular as sterile) and her character's relationship to Orlok running far deeper than in the earlier films.

Gosh that's harsh. I take it you don't consider the Murnau or Herzog versions sterile or devoid of drama? If not, what would you say makes the difference?
