Ukraine offers a vital set of lessons as to how to throw off a corrupt leader. I visited in 2019 for Surmountable book and share the chapter in Substack. Resistance. Massive protests for months. What to watch for as Trump calls in the thugs. #Ukraine #Euromaidan

I will be returning to Ukraine in August, six years after my visit to Kyiv to write about the EuroMaidan revolution. I’ll go to express my solidarity with the Ukrainian peoples’ resistance to Russian aggression.

I will be singing these seven songs each day on my 70th birthday jaunt through Ukraine. I will be seeking out Ukrainian songs and songwriters on similar matters of social justice, peace, and ecology. And gathering stories of living under the threat of violence from the air.

OK, I'm going. On my 70th birthday, August 4th, I will fly to Warsaw, then travel the length and breadth of Ukraine for my 7th book. It will be a sequel, a postscript of sorts, to last year's My Fabulous Fascist Summer Vacation.

We're going to need Nuremberg trials when this is over, yes, and to send a significant number of people currently in the federal government to prison. But we're going to need an unwavering commitment to ostracizing the supporters of it, as well. Never accept them again in polite society.

Great inspiration to me as a young fellow. RIP. Old one too.
I was fortunate enough to know him a little and he was just as he always came across on television, smart, wise, funny and humane. He will be missed. So, I'm afraid, will be the values he championed both as a journalist and as someone who cared greatly about our democracy.

If you were too young in 2003 here is what Bush told the American people:

1) The Iraq War won’t cost a lot of money
3) We won’t need a lot of troops
4) We’ll bring peace and freedom to Iraq
5) We’ll find WMDs
6) We’ll be welcomed as liberators
7) It will be easy
8) It won’t take long

All lies.

What a contrast:

On the one hand, one grandiose spectacle in the nation's capital, a panorama of propaganda put on by an aspiring autocrat.

On the other hand, thousands of assemblies of free citizens across the nation, authentic celebrations of the proposition that here the people rule.
