The phrase has been used for a while, specifically by Mexicans, I think, not all Latino groups.

Sounds similar to a cake I made for my own birthday a few years back. I did a Black Forest Cake recipe, but since neither my wife nor I like those syrupy cherries, I used fresh strawberries in between the layers and on top.
Of course, I’m lousy at frosting, so it was a mess, but it tasted good!
