Maybe these are not documentaries in the traditional sense. Do we need a new category for when directors and crew are emotionally invested in their subjects?

Documentarians have always had decisions in the direction of the camera and what to cut or include.

Right or wrong the growth of the documentary is fueled by the usage of modern film techniques while engaging with real subjects. The form has evolved from observation to elegant essays and prose evoking emotional truth vs observational reality. (Directors: D Gelb, M Heineman, B Fogel, etc)

Is documentary imitating films or is it two sided? Lucas with THX / American Graffiti and many others brought cinema verite approaches to films since the mid 70s as a way to breed authenticity.

AND do the tik tok and reels consuming audience have the patience to let the story play out?
