#49ers’ film hack. Heavy metal snob, music elitist. US House and Senate alum. I once high-fived Dianne Feinstein after talking football.
And a happy birthday to this debut show, which turned 35 years old today. It is now eligible to be US President.

In 2004, Mike Shanahan - now head coach of the Broncos - introduced 300 Jet Lion Drag slant. It's the same play that Kyle has today in his book & the same play that he called last week to get the 49ers some breathing room late in the game - which I can't post here because it's a video clip.

Sprint Right Option, the same way Walsh drew it up, was also in Gruden's book. Shanahan also has Sprint Right Option, but like Gruden, just calls it Q8.

In his book, he introduced the 'lion' concept - the mirrored slant routes - on plays like 322 Scat Y Stick Lion. He also had 300 Jet Lion - mirrored slant routes on both sides of the formation,

Also included in the 1994 book was Mike's Far Double Wing Right X Right 62 (63) Z Drive, which is nearly identical to Kyle's 'arches' concept - called twice during the Week 5 win. The one below is what Bourne converted into a 35-yd gain.

In 1994, then 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan introduced the 'dragon' terminology. Rather than a solo slant, the play evolved to two dragon concepts on either side of the formation. The elder Shanahan's book also had keeper plays, which look nearly the same as Kyle's designs today.

Mike Holmgren’s 1991 49er playbook kept Walsh’s idea, but Holmgren called it Red Right Y Motion Pass 331 Drag Slant. The dragon concept remained, it just sounded a bit different.

Former head coach Jon Gruden was an offensive quality control coach under Holmgren, so keep that in mind as we evolve.

For whatever it’s worth, Walsh also had a Statue of Liberty play in his 1985 book, but I’m unclear if he actually called it.

The play remained in the 1985 playbook. The ‘dragon’ combination is still there on the right. The '22/23' still exists in today's terminology. It indicates the backs are splitting.

Here's a similar look in Bill Walsh's 1982 playbook as 'Red Right Pass 331 'X' Slant'.

Vince Lombardi's 1966 Green Bay Packers offense ran a dragon combination, which he called Slant Pass or 36 Pass. You can see the 'dragon' concept - a slant route pairs with a drag route - on the left.

3Q: 1 & 10 at the SF36 (6:32) Jones to Pearsall for 18yds on Wide Right Clamp F Short P14 Jab Z Rider F Shallow. The shallow cross was a great add to Rider - held up the LBs, opening the throwing window for Jones to hit Pearsall.

2Q: 1 & 10 at the SF32 (8:40) Jones to Valdes-Scantling for 9yds. I have this as Both Curl Y Over. Full clip won't post.

Backstage at Ozzfest in 2006. Also Serj providing all access passes at a few of his solo shows.

This is the best I can do.

2 & 19 at the SEA25 (10:57) Purdy scrambles for 4yds. I am not sure the play, but that's 21 protection. Unclear why Purdy didn't hit Pearsall on a corner. It's a safe throw, just aim at the 1 or 2 hashmark on the sideline. Scramble was not needed at all.

Summing up the 49ers in 2024.

Broken leashes

Keys left hanging
in a swinging door.

Honorary Robert Saleh Pregame Run is complete, including a running a mile up a hill. Doing my part to ensure a #49ers’ victory.
