I teach history and write about US politics, cities, and inequality, most recently in ILLUSIONS OF PROGRESS: Business, Poverty, and Liberalism in the American Century (Penn Press, 2023).
One of the better takes on the Platner episode. Further proof of the excellence of @defector.com and the importance of independent platforms. Thanks @davidjroth.bsky.social

To abundance advocates we offer a strong note of caution about public incentives and private partnerships. Fred Trump didn't just exploit the FHA system: he embodied its core logics of liberalized credit, socialized risk, and privatized profits.

Not the first time that we've retreated to "inclusivity" as a means of obscuring or running from frank assessments of power and truth. It never goes well. www.jstor.org/stable/26360...

So grateful for @tealarcadi.bsky.social's deep engagement with ILLUSIONS OF PROGRESS. It's also a thrill to be considered alongside Destin Jenkins, Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, and Gabe Winant, from whom I've learned so much. Can't wait for Teal's book! #skystorians

New "temporary" guidelines for "open expression" just dropped at Penn. Any event where the encampment once was now requires two weeks notice. They're essentially mandating that students organize university sanctioned protest booths. Anything else violates the guidelines for open expression. Cool.

Students moved immediately to cover it, and it was power washed and gone within three hours.

Just saw POOR THINGS last night (hoo boy - run, don't walk to see this) and Mark Ruffalo is very much aging into this conversation. Incredible performances by Dafoe and Stone, too, but the way he plays this guy . . .
