(Trips: Istanbul & Konya - 🇹🇷 Dec)
Art, architecture, photography, travels- all that make for an interesting life.
Sometimes with a queer slant. Posting my own photographs - current work and some favourites.
Carrying on the theme of colourful interiors, here are 3 of my favourite mosques of the many beautiful examples in Istanbul, Türkiye - Yeni in Eminönü, Süleymaniye in Fatih and Mihrimah Sultan in Üsküdar.

Saint-Germain-des-Prés in the Paris 6th arr. with its colourful interior. This is a 19th-century restoration, but the concept known as polychromy was common in churches during the 10th to 12th centuries.

My photo of the ceiling at York Minster earlier in the week reminded me of a shot of another great domed ceiling - Galeries Lafayette Haussmann, the famous store in Paris ! 🙂

Sometimes I feel a single shot can sum up a place for me in a warm and fuzzy kinda way. This is Berlin, taken from Museumsinsel, looking over the Spree at Nikolaiviertel, with Alexanderplatz and the Fernsehturm behind. Will always hang on my wall! 😊

The Prix Pictet–Storm at the V&A includes photograher Patrizia Zelano. Intriguing work, based around books rescued from the catastrophic Venice flood of 2019, is thought provoking, and very relevant.

When the sun shines in Scotland, it really is like another country. I was born in Glasgow, and rain free days on the west coast are rare. These are from Skye, an amazing summer in 2016, on the ferry from Mallaig, and looking over to Knoydart.

Dating from the Fatimid period, c11th century CE, these unusual ceramic dishes feature images of animals.
The Islamic Ceramics Museum, Cairo has many pieces of Luster, ceramic painted to look like gold. The blue Ewer is Persian, c14th century CE.

Prince Amr Ibrahim Palace,Cairo houses the Islamic Ceramics Museum. An outstanding venue to showcase the Egyptian ceramics collection brought together for the first time in 1999. Part of the collection sits on the original marble dining table!

"Ancient India: living traditions" at the British Museum, London, has some amazing statues and other artefacts. The favourite for me is Ganesha, always. The Hindu God, is known as the remover of obstacles and of new beginnings.

As is the way in Istanbul, I stumbled across the Bozdoğan Kemeri, or Valens Aqueduct (373 CE) while wandering the Fatih district. Impressive sight, even more so when I found out it was in service for more than 1500 years!

Tate Modern London, have a celebration of the very diverse work and life of Leigh Bowery. For me it was the photography, but this multi-media show brings the 80s back to vibrant life- postcards from his tours, costumes and a BBC interview that is just 👌

Unplanned visit to the National Portrait Gallery in London but got to see the "Jenny Saville: The Anatomy of Painting" exhibition. Big, bold, brutal pieces, colourful and some almost distrubing, but all stunning. Just go if you can!! 👍 #contemporaryart #nationalportraitgallery #london #jennysaville

Église Saint-Étienne-du-Mont in the Paris 5th arr. holds the shrine of St Geneviève. The space and light are quite stunning...there is a fluidity that flows throughout the building.

Seacity museum in Southampton, celebrating the history of the city, is dominated by the Titanic. The most poignant part for me is the map showing where each member of the crew lost, actually lived. The impact on the city was immense 🥺 And so long lasting.

Walking down Euston Road, London, just past St Pancras Station you will find St Pancras New Church (Inwood, 1822). In the Greek revival style, it features some quite stunning caryatids-the dusk light showing them at their most atmospheric.

Following on from my last post, Institut de Monde Arabe(now spelt correctly!) sits in a building by Ateliers Jean Nouvel, completing in 1987. The panelling makes the site stand out, enhanced by the reflected sun and clouds-set piece for me!!🙂

Unique exhibition at the Institu Du Monde Arabe in Paris, showcasing some of the archeology saved from Gaza, through the many wars, over many, many years. Anything that highlights the plight Gaza, at any time, helps. #photography #archeology #Paris #InstituDuMondeArabe #gazaarchaeology

Peter Hujar "Eyes Open in the Dark" at Raven Row, London. Vast collection from this gay photographer and activist. From the late 50s, the best from the 70s-80s, showing NYC culture of the time. Equally uplifting and sad-but brilliant.
