I doubt many of these folk couldn't put down an opinion column and pick up a novel, or some poetry, if they had a gun to their head.

It just feels to me like a kind of bubble thinking where people can't see beyond the preoccupations, projects and biases they chew over all day with their cronies. People who want power, fixated on party politics and therefore 'news'.

It doesn't have to be this way. Even if it is trending downwards (and I'm not sure whether I agree it is or not, overall) it can't trend upwards if it doesn't survive, and it's certainly too valuable and worthwhile to slaughter, disregard or take for granted.

The last thing books need is some kind of BBFC but maybe if the publishers could get together and draft a Swearing Charter that would be great, thanks.

Mary Shelley's book is one of my favourite books of all time. Guillermo del Toro's film will have to settle for being one of the films I really enjoyed this year. There's no doubting the craft, sincerity, imagination and passion.
