Pretty soon the Reform Party in the Commons will be like the Cheshire Cat. It will have disappeared but only its grin will be left. Except that the Reform Party is a party of angry grievance rather than good-humoured grins.

The story of Trump’s tariffs is an everyday tale of Brexit folk. The much-touted “Brexit benefit” for the UK from Trump’s barmy scheme was hypothetical, dubious and trivial. And even if it existed in the first place, it evaporated in under a week. Let us hope Brexit will soon evaporate too.

It’s very unlikely that the EU would allow the UK to cherry-pick its way into the SM and CU. Nor would the project of being a European rule-taker be saleable in the UK. The only answer is for the UK to rejoin the EU with no ifs and buts.
