Peaked in the BBS era
Hogan’s Heroes punctured that idea a bit - though also sanitized them.

AFAICT all those GW dudes in the 80s were just trying to make each other laugh with increasingly ridiculous names. Graeme Davis has a series of blog posts on some of the inside jokes with the Warhammer Fantasy names: graemedavis.wordpress.com/2025/08/02/w...
WFRP 1 Easter Eggs: Something Rotten in Kislev
It’s fairly common knowledge by now that Something Rotten in Kislev was not in the original plan for the Enemy Within campaign. Ken Rolston became available and GW management thought that his…

I took three years of it in college. Primary use to date is confusing people who try to sell me things at the door. “Jeg forstår den ikke. Unnskyld!”

The other games in that Hogshead series are also great - but Power Kill certainly a great commentary on murder hobo behavior.

He’s just incredibly wry, funny and readable - the text to Bring Me the Head of the Comte de Saint-Germain makes me wish I could get my players to read through all the details post-game to enjoy the bon mots.

Anyone recommend the Redwall series (Brian Jacques) yet?

I saw someone else mention the Vorkosigan books by Lois McMaster Bujold and those are also great.

Given the history of the movie, I assume James Cameron is involved somehow and just hasn’t gotten around to it.

YES. I'm not sure who to blame for the lack of Fancy Media Release, but I'm basically irate all the time that this movie doesn't get more attention.

Absolutely a complete crime that we don’t have a 4k transfer of Strange Days OR a vinyl release of the crazy ass soundtrack.

Tricky! Me Phi Me?! Peter Gabriel singing in Macedonian? A song by Juliette Lewis that’s completely credible? Madness. Should’ve sold ten million copies.

The second right answer is Barrow’s Boys, in which we learn all the lunatic ways that British explorers found to kill themselves abroad.

“California Democrats previously planned to pass a map that would take effect only if Texas acts. But on Thursday morning, they removed that contingency, arguing it was nearly inevitable that Texas would move forward and that voters could be confused by the trigger”

He's a former Starbucks guy. Still lickin' boots years later.

He ends up couching the complaint as "she's telling people to stop supporting a local business" as though there aren't thousands of actual local coffee options in Seattle, all of which would keep local money local.

Great piece - I think it captures the cultural context of the 80s really well.

I’d be interested in your thoughts on the current Free League revision. I feel like it has shifted the balance (rightly) from militarism toward survivalism, rendering it less of a power fantasy than earlier editions.

My favorite ever pickup basketball game was when an unknown dude (in Oregon) showed up in head-to-toe Rockets gear, played four or five ineffective minutes on the wing, tripped over his own feet receiving a pass and landed face first on the court, chipping his tooth and immediately left forever.
