Why would anyone understand this is a joke? There’s a ton of hate directed toward phonics and all the people replying to you seem to think phonics is bad and don’t seem to get that you are joking

Phonics is totally different from the 3 cueing stuff, what evidence do you have that phonics based education is bad?

I don’t think in general that’s the case, common techniques for introducing bias are used for lowering variance, but yes sometimes introducing bias can introduce variance, they’re technically orthogonal!

Isn’t this technically a case where it’s variance helping you become more accurate, not bias?

Yes this is just the bias-variance tradeoff, but students do find it unintuitive. I tell them that a bias is basically just an assumption that helps you learn faster. If it’s a true assumption, it will typically help you learn faster and more accurately.

For better or for worse, PhD programs are highly incentivized to filter at the admissions stage for people likely to succeed at doing research, so it seems misguided to complain about high completion rates.
