Honoured to visit Port Moresby Gen Hospital. TB is the nation’s #1 killer & we’re proud to work with PNG on addressing it. Note the key to how TB spread has been mitigated in hospital settings for decades - airborne controls… lessons that should be applied more widely. @burnetinstitute.bsky.social

CO2 readings from my kids 6-hr holiday program activity today, in a room shared with 20-30 other kids. Clearly an increased risk of COVID & other airborne infections. Reducing kids chances of re-infection (therefore long COVID) means improving indoor air quality in classrooms. This is achievable.

Sleep Cycle’s cough radar - there’s little real time indication of respiratory disease risk out there so this is one to watch and assess. Suggests things are on the up where I live.

Thinking of my family & friends in Bilinga (just north of Coolangatta) & surrounds incl millions in Brisbane & Gold Coast. This is a very big deal for the country. Thanks to first responders, to all those who keep things going, & to neighbors simply looking out for others. Tough days & weeks ahead.

None of this is a surprise but it’s powerful to see it put together so well. Diversity, equity and inclusion is not just morally right, although it is, it’s good economics.

The section on perceived vs desired priorities for science is fascinating. Especially relevant is the role of science in reducing poverty, people want to see much more of that. 2/end

Proud of the Burnet team & special congrats to these stars. Research into HIV, malaria, social housing, injecting drug use, & approaches to contraception in adolescents pretty much sums us up. All toward our vision of a more equitable world through better health.

Air quality not great when boarding & waiting for planes to take off as I am now - you’re breathing a lot of other people’s exhaled air. As with buses, trams & trains, this is a v good time to wear a respirator mask. Protect yourself & others.

Discussion on the impact of COVID mitigations in schools is welcome. But sweeping statements without context likely does more harm than good. A reminder, pre-vax, most Australians encountered neither the disease (thanks to suppression) nor substantial stay at home measures. 1/
