Obvious there are so many books that inspired each of us to become authors, but a couple that jump instantly to my memory are these:

We all know publishing takes a lot of patience. One way I've maintained some sense of control is always having a side project that I get to put out on MY time. Currently that's been my comic Claudia Claws, a moody little story about a cat basketball player who was forced into retirement.
