It's so crazy how things so far away like the fires in other provinces can have such an impact on the lives of people here and in other places as well.

On average, it takes between 12,000 and 15,000 gallons of water to make the ice in an NHL arena. There are 32 teams in the league so that's around 480,000 gallons used around the league. Staples Center in LA is one of the only arenas that uses reused water to make their ice.

In sport, not all people in positions of power are respected. The NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is booed every time he steps foot in an arena or makes a speech in front of fans. This shows that power in sport isn't always a good thing, especially if the people in power aren't respected.

I think if an athlete's performance starts to be impacted by the comments they get on social media, it is in their own best interest to remove themselves from that situation, which sucks because the intended purpose was to help promote themselves, not recieve criticism.

In class we compared many news companies to see which ones had the most diverse coverage. It was really interesting to me that even now, stories on women are rare, and stories about disabilities are even more rare. To me, this shows there's still a lot of work that needs to be done in the media.

Phil Kessel is one of the all-time great Maple Leaf's players and will be forever remembered for his contributions to the team and to the NHL as a whole, regardless of what his body may look like!

During the 2017 World Series, the Houston Astros were caught using video cameras to relay the catchers signs back to the batter and baserunners. The team was fined $5 million along with other punishment. This would be an example of negative deviance as the team was cheating and breaking MLB rules.

I still think it's going to take some time before seeing a female coach in male dominated sports is considered normal.

It's all these "firsts" that are starting to bring recognition to female athletes and grow the game. These women are also setting great examples for younger girls and are showing them that anything is possible!

I grew up very close to where Ethan Bear is from, so it was really cool to watch his journey to the NHL and even get to interact with him through the hockey camps he would put in order to give back to his community.

Jessica Campbell became the first female coach in the NHL when she was brought on by the Seattle Kraken as an assistant coach. She broke a barrier that historically had excluded women from leadership roles in traditionally male-dominated sports like hockey.

P.K. Subban was drafted 43rd overall by the Montreal Canadians in the 2007 NHL draft and went on to have a hall of fame worthy career. He also made huge impacts in his community by establishing the P.K. Subban foundation in 2014 and donated over $10 million to the Montreal children's hospital.

Even with a full-time career, I still hope to be involved in sport whether it is playing, volunteering or coaching my own kids one day. I also want to become a sports physiotherapist so I will stay involved with sports that way and help others stay involved in sport as well.

The Toronto Blue Jays run a program called Jr. Jays Sunday. Every Sunday home game, kids can visit different zones around the ballpark for fun activities, run the bases after the game and get to meet their favorite players. This program makes sports more fun for youth.

This article discusses the pay gap between men and women in sport. Compared to other sectors, sports are ranked very poorly in terms of equal pay. How teams travel to games and the conditions or facilities they play in are also worse for women.

To me, a sport is anything that involves physical skills and activity and requires an exertion of energy. It can be both individual or team based and can be done for enjoyment or for competition.
