@dx modern radar also makes it tenable to plan your trip for in between rainfall periods, if you can wiggle your schedule a bit. Sometimes waiting five minutes will make all the difference.

@cstross I think Pynchon has the inverse problem, where he needs to make up scads of new characters to deplete the river of catchy names flowing through his head.
