11. Yume Nikki (2004)

The inspiration of an entire subgenre of horror games, Yume Nikki or Dream Diary is a game that I have played on and off for over a decade. The sights and moments you experience are incredible, and the games that follow it are good too. My favorite spin off is .flow

10. Mouthwashing (2024)

What a horror game. It's low on the actual scares and more about the building sense of dread as the situation unfolds. Iconic and stylish with enough substance to think about after finishing, but not too much that you get lost.

9. 1000xRESIST (2024)

Somehow I keep finding story games that I am not in the demographic for but adore regardless. This game is a strange blend of a false utopia, an apocalyptic story with analogies to COVID-19, a story about diaspora finding their way in a strange land, and more. Amazing.

8. Paper Mario (2000)

The first game I beat without my mom or dad helping me read the text. My brother and I would play this all the time after school and eventually beat it together, swapping off attempts on the final boss whenever one of us lost.

7. SOMA (2015)

A phenomenal shift from gothic horror to sci-fi horror by the developers behind Amnesia: the Dark Descent and the Penumbra series. Amazing horror in both environment and existential ways. You know what will happen, but understand it has to be this way.

Rule of 6. SIGNALIS (2022)

A cosmic horror story mixed with early survival horror gameplay set in a futuristic dystopia.

GREAT HOLES SECRETLY ARE DIGGED WHERE EARTH'S PORES OUGHT TO SUFFICE

AND THINGS HAVE LEARNT TO WALK THAT OUGHT TO CRAWL

Remember our promise.

5. Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories (2006)

A sequel to the original Disgaea, and an improvement on the first game in almost every way. The story, while contrived, is still enjoyable and the happy ending is earned. The gameplay is much easier to grind through. Rozalin forever waifu.

4. Library of Ruina (2020)

The sequel to Lobotomy Corporation. It's a Library Battle Simulation game. You have turn based fights with card-based combat and build decks and slot passive abilities onto your librarians, who kill the invited guests and turn them into books to be used in the next fight.

3. Lobotomy Corporation (2018)

I bounced off this a little bit when my partner Phina (I love you) showed me a snippet of gameplay. Once I learned more about the story I got hooked. It is an amazing game that is hampered by sometimes clunky controls. Not for everyone, but top tier experience.

2. Dark Cloud (2000)

A fairly simple dungeon crawling RPG where an ancient evil destroys the world. You have to find and collect gems containing the world as it was, and rebuild the various towns you visit to save the world and stop further destruction. Amazing music and my first PS2 game.

1. X-COM: UFO Defense (1993)

I first began playing the X-COM series in middle school with Terror From the Deep, and later went back to the original at the start of high school. I replay this every year or two, it's incredibly important to me.
