Introducing BRAVE:
Biological Invasions Resolved through Adaptable, Versatile & Engaging Nature-Based Solutions
Biodiversa+ project (2025–2028)
Last week in Rome, the #BRAVE project was presented by Lucrezia Cilenti during CNR's scientific exhibition at Villa dei Quintili.
Part of CNR’s book Stories, sharing work on #NatureBasedSolutions & #InvasiveSpecies, integrating ecology& economics. Great discussion in a remarkable historical setting

We’re delighted to welcome Eliud Mugendi as a PhD student at NMBU, supervised by @edsandorf.bsky.social Aida Tabarroky Ardebili & Ståle Navrud. Eliud, an environmental economist, will work on choice experiments for the Pacific oyster case 🦪. Welcome aboard! #BRAVE #InvasiveSpecies

Last week @edsandorf.bsky.social represented #BRAVE at ENVECHO in KU Leuven, BE. He presented & received feedback on our plans to combine stated & revealed preference methods to address invasive species with multiple roles - an exciting step toward refining how we capture trade-offs in managing them

Amidst the chaos, work continues. The crabs march on, in a new paper out with co-authors from the now-completed PICO (Participatory modelling of integrated ecosystem based management regime for invasive crabs) Project. As in most of my discussions of the crab invasions in the Barents Sea, I would argue that these ecosystem disruptors provide insights far beyond their individual nuisances (e.g.

Invasive species altering ecosystems &livelihoods: the #BlueCrab washed ashore on the Adriatic coast, the #PacificOyster widely spread in nearshore areas, and the #PacificPinkSalmon thriving in Norwegian waters.

Stakeholder engagement & impact: We work with citizens, managers & entrepreneurs to co-design transformative policy options that respect diverse values & promote synergies between conservation & use.

Broader contributions: Beyond ecology, BRAVE brings a critical social science & governance lens to invasion management—often overlooked but essential for cost-effective, equitable solutions.
July 2, 2025 at 10:19 AM
Socioeconomic focus: BRAVE evaluates how harvest (including citizen & recreational efforts) impacts ecosystems & policy. We use economic tools to assess trade-offs, user values & design incentives for smart, fair conservation. #NatureBasedSolutions

Case studies across Europe:
🦪 Pacific Oyster (DK, NO, SE)
🐟 Pink Salmon (NO)
🦀 Blue Crab (IT, PT)
These illustrate conflicting values, local engagement, and nature-based solutions in marine waters, including protected areas.

BRAVE addresses the ecological & societal trade-offs of managing invasive species that provide both benefits & burdens. We combine economics, ecology & stakeholder participation to develop better solutions. #TheBRAVEProject #Biodiversity #InvasiveSpecies #NatureBasedSolutions
