However, both reading and listening are completely valid ways to absorb information, therefore, while audiobooks aren't "reading" in the literal sense, they are an equally valid way of engaging with literature. There's nothing wrong or inferior about listening to a book.

I disagree. Reading means interpreting a written form of expression. Braille is written, so it counts as reading. Audiobooks aren't; you wouldn't say you read the score of a symphony just because you listened to it—the musicians are reading, you are listening.
