Gulf of Mexico first appeared on a world map in 1550. US didn't declare independence until 1776. The Gulf of Mexico is an international body of water & the POTUS's authority to rename it is ambiguous. Therefore, it is still the Gulf of Mexico to everyone else in the world except elitist Americans.
