And Joe should have tried to forewarned Nick (and possibly David) that he would switch at the last minute but that we would go in hard on David and switch to Cat at the last minute.

Assuming that there are two traitors who can communicate with each other and will stick together at the last roundtable, Nick, -trusting Joe at that point- should have been able to work out that Alan and Cat voting together incriminated them both and -potentially- exonerated David.
