Even though I know the current thumbnail trend on YouTube is close ups of exaggerated faces with stupidly oversaturated backgrounds, I refuse to conform.

I like my silly bits of digital art.

Of course, Sommers could have retroactively made the decision to make them two different characters.

The problem is that I cannot find an original source for the director making this claim; it only appeared in the past couple of years on Wikis and in forums.

However the people behind the first prequel, The Scorpion King, absolutely believed it was the same character. Here is the Rock, and producer James Jacks, discussing it in the movie's featurette:

Sommers is supposed to have stated that the two characters cannot be the same because he didn't believe such a heroic man could transform into such an evil villain.

This is fair. I've made the same point myself numerous times.

Today, however, I read something I hadn't noticed before.

Apparently, people are saying that Mathayus from The Scorpion King prequels is the grandfather of Mathayus from The Mummy Returns. This fact, evidently, comes from the director of the latter Stephen Sommers.

In these videos, I've always been critical of the huge difference between the hero we see in the prequel movies and the tyrant we see in the prologue of The Mummy Returns.
April 8, 2025 at 6:47 PM
Well this is interesting 🤔

So as you may know, I've spent the past year creating pointlessly long video essays about The Scorpion King franchise because.... why not.
April 8, 2025 at 6:47 PM
Calling it now.

The Prototype from Poppy Playtime is going to look a lot like the Scorpion King from The Mummy Returns.

And the player character is Brendan Fraser.
(This part is unlikely. I just want more Brendan Fraser in my life).

My thumbnail game is still going strong! Perfectly encapsulates @tomkirkbride.bsky.social's love for leg whilst subtly hinting at the mutants you encounter on your journey.

Nice work, Brad.
Thanks, Brad.

Why do I always look so glorious every time I make a thumbnail where I'm on a boat?!

I need to buy a boat... ⛵️

Something I don't think I've ever done - shared a couple of photos 10 years apart.

First is 2015. Second is 2025.

Honestly... I don't look that different 😂

Went to the gym today.

I maintain that this is the hottest I've ever looked, and it was for a fucking YouTube ad spot... 💀

When you mess around with your game settings trying to make one section more "atmospheric" and then don't realise that's the reason you can't see a fucking thing for the next half hour 🙃

I asked some friends to create memes out of this photo of me and @midnight_neesh, and this one nearly fuckin' took me out 🤣🤣🤣

New gaming video after a two month break is my first foray into the colourful, creepy world of Poppy Playtime! Honestly surprised it's taken me this long to play this.

Nice.

There's also a lot of plot contrivances to get to the ending. Are they saying that a doctor from a mental health clinic bought, furnished, marketed and ran a real escape room experience, and hired a bunch of his patients as the cast, just so one girl could get revenge on one man?
February 4, 2025 at 2:37 PM
So DJ gets arrested, everyone in the escape room tells the same story that he just snapped and started confessing, and that's it.

Another one for the "great concept, poor execution" pile of movies.

OOH ANOTHER TWIST I DID NOT SEE COMING!!! 'DEAD' BEST FRIEND AND GIRLFRIEND IN CAHOOTS!!!

You know what, I admit it, I underestimated this film because it had a terrible rating. Coming into it with rock bottom expectations means I'm enjoying the shit out of it when it throws something good at me.
February 4, 2025 at 2:12 PM
He murdered his lifelong best friend the moment he thought he couldn't trust him, but his fairly timid girlfriend laughs in his face while surrounded by dead bodies, toys with him, tells him he should remember her from his past, and his reaction is "I'm worried about you, babe!"
February 4, 2025 at 2:00 PM
Then DJ kills his friend with a tiny syringe to try and bury his secret.

But is he forgetting that a group of over a dozen people are running an escape room themed around one of his crimes THAT HE IS STILL LOCKED INSIDE.

Well done murdering on CCTV with witnesses, you clown.
February 4, 2025 at 1:53 PM
Okay, this big finale scene is complete nonsense.

DJ is accusing his friend of telling someone about his involvement in the young girl's death. He was a witness to it. Makes sense.

His friend defends himself, seemingly unbothered by his dead wife on the floor at his feet.
February 4, 2025 at 1:53 PM
So, credit where it's due, the reveal that DJ is actually a serial murderer is fantastic. Didn't see it coming. Well done movie!

Bit weird that he randomly just starts confessing the moment he's trapped though. The escape room has only hinted at one crime so far.
February 4, 2025 at 1:36 PM
I get that there are similarities between the real crime he committed and the escape room, but Dirtbag Jesus is SO QUICK to believe everything and break down.

The moment he thinks it might be a setup, he beats his best friend over the head with a fire extinguisher *just in case* he's in on it.
