We have gas heat rather than a heat pump though, so I don't know if that makes a difference.

Our HVAC installation also required us to get an ecobee... But they didn't require us to connect it to the Internet and activate it. So it's effectively working like a dumb old thermostat that just happens to have a touchscreen and doesn't require a monthly subscription.

MAX deal just went live - $3/month for up to 6 months for the ad-supported plan. There's no discount on the ad-free plan though.

I'd rather have an edit button. :)
