Needs a bit of work, but not bad for our first attempt on the new lightsheet microscope... #FluorescenceFriday (again on a Saturday 🙃)

Again a bit late for #FluorescenceFriday, but here's a decent image of anterior crista from a rat inner ear. The long projections in magenta are stereocilia, which, on crista hair cells, are likely the longest microvilli made by any cells in mammals. They help with balance, movement, and vision.

Superman movie is out. Haven't gotten a chance to see it yet, but it did inspire me to look at some of my collection which is usually hidden in boxes around the house, including this gem...

Just a dinosaur enjoying the sunrise.

A favorite poster of mine, originally from 1949, but seems timely as there seems to be some questions about superman online these days...

Hydrangeas looking pretty good in the back garden...likely need more water and more acid.

Got some new books for bedtime reading with the kids. I believe tonight we start book 2 of Fart Quest (having already rapaciously devoured book 1 in this soon to be literary classic series)

I feel this so much all the time...

Got an old Leica microscope working again in the lab (with a $50 objective bought on ebay). Can you tell which image is from the $50 objective (and $16,000 camera) versus the one taken on the $600,000 confocal microscope?

Mr. Musk, I believe this will be MUCH more effective if YOU call my senator and representative. Thx.

A day late for #FluorescenceFriday but here is a video from what we've been working on lately, looking at synapses and axonal "coats" (orange). The presynaptic components are teal and the postsynaptic glutamate receptors are shown in white.

I know I usually post "aerial" views, but here's a side view of auditory cells from a section of a mouse temporal bone. The hair cells are labeled (green) with a Myo7a antibody and the nuclei of inner hair cells and supporting cells (magenta) are labeled with a GATA3 antibody. #FluorescenceFriday

Putting Easter chocolate to good use by combining it with soy, chilis, salt and spices on an 8lb brisket.

Been extra busy lately. More pics will be forthcoming. But here is one for #FluorescenceFriday (more auditory hair cells in mouse cochlea but also inner & outer sulcus & spiral limbus)

Truly iconic. And so great to see a bit of good news, celebrating what I've always seen as what made America great (hint it's not tax cuts for billionaires nor tech bros)

Grilling burgers for dinner on a sunny Sunday, and making sandwiches for the lunchboxes this week... I'm like a Vegas blackjack dealer with these Velveeta cheese slices... and yes Velveeta and Cheez Whiz in this house. Kids may not've been born in Philly but they will feel it in their blood.

An image from my postdoc for this #FluorescenceFriday this is the apical turn of a cochlea from a fluorescent reporter mouse, it is a 2D representation of a 3D image, the colors are depth coding so the yellow neurons are the farthest down and the blue areas are closest to the top

My 10yo daughter made this for her backpack
Her: because I know some people are mean to people who are LGBTQ and I want them to see this and know I'll be their friend and I'll be nice to them
Me: Oh my sweet girl, I'm so proud of you, but this world is going to eat you up and spit...

Ah ah ah, Pete, the highest level of screw up imaginable... so far.

Spring is here! Pollen and allergies ✅️. But also Peach blossoms in the back yard!

For #FluorescenceFriday here are some images of single molecule fluorescent in situ hybridization (smFISH) for Insm1 (red/magenta) combined with immunolabeling of Myo6 (green). With smFISH, each dot labels a single mRNA molecule which allows us to count transcript/gene expression in cells, in situ.

Did an at home version of "Is it cake?" (Or is it play doh?) With the kids today for St. Patrick's Day (they were off school for some reason).

RIP to our 30+ year old washing machine. You worked so long that rust fused your axle to the drum preventing me from replacing your clutch and once again prolonging your life. I will honor you the only way I know how... by stripping your remaining parts to sell on eBay so other washers may live.
