The underlying conditions have changed but many reporters and editors are having trouble processing it because they fear that by using such clear and blunt language they will be expressing opinions and undermine their credibility, thereby doing more damage. 2/3

Agree. It would be instructive to figure out how to measure the difference in speed/intensity between the old technology and the new in each era, and compare that to its social and political impact in each case

What’s new is the speed and reach and algorithmic focusing of the audience. It’s like severe storms: we’ve always had them but with climate change they develop faster and are a lot more intense.

Anyone trying to divine an ideological profile or platform from Trump’s campaign misunderstands what Trumpism is. Grievance, not governing. Channeling the rage of people who are afraid of demographic and political change.

Trump ran as the avatar of American anger and the editorial choices about what to cover should be viewed through that lens. Journalists saw that anger as transgressive and that is what made it news.
