So now that it seems that much of the money taken out of the US stock market didn’t make its way to the bond markets. It appears that it actually left the American dollar for European and Asian markets. What’s the next move to get rates down? Steeper tariff threats? More talk on annexations?
March 17, 2025 at 6:00 PM
The tariff nonsense is a tool to disrupt the US economy and the stock markets, to push down bond yields and in turn lower interest rates. Lower Interest rates make US federal debt cheaper to finance. This helps Trump afford to give the wealthy more tax breaks? How does this help the avg American?

President Trump announced 25% tariffs on Canadian imports will take effect on March 4, 2025.

Somebody needs to stop refilling his crayon box! Hopefully this will get worked out shortly. If not I believe we will see some dramatic changes in the future of our housing market.

The BOCs latest Market Participants Survey for Q4 2024 States that financial experts expect modest growth in 2025, with GDP to rise by approximately 2.1%. Inflation to remain near the 2%. Respondents identified a stronger housing market as a potential upside to growth. On the other hand…Trump.

Time for Friday real estate Haiku.

Rates drop, doors open,
Hope returns with whispered deals,
Keys find eager hands. 😂

The Bank of Canada dropped the rate by 0.25% today, followed by TD, BMO, CIBC, and RBC lowering their prime rate to 5.20%, effective January 30. It’s a start, but stay tuned for potential 'emergency' cuts if U.S.-Canada tariffs materialize in February 😮

Lots of clients working through choosing fixed or variable rate mortgage renewal. Will the economy continue to pick up steam or is RBC correct that tariffs will force the BOC to cut deep and fast to try and save the economy? Personally I am going variable until this dust settles. 2% 🤔?

Can 5 year bond rate finally dropping below 3%. Might be some additional fixed rate mortgage relief in the near future. Lots of clients cringing as they get closer to renewal.

BOC ends Quantitative Tightening on the eve of Trumps inauguration. They say the Canadian Banks would be comfortable with at least $50 billion in reserve! (Who wouldn’t be!). Why so much! When it gets really quiet I can hear the money printers getting plugged in.

The unemployment rate reportedly dropped slightly to 6.7% from 6.8% in Nov. Analysts predicted 6.9!
A bit surprised to see, a chunk of these new jobs were full-time positions, and disappointed that 44% were coming from the public sector—now making up nearly a third of total Canadian employment!

So compared to last dec Toronto area sales and pricing down under 2%. Listings up over 20%. Spring is going to kick off early as all the folks who took their listings off market for the holidays will want to get back in before buyers have even more choices.

Can somebody please make a menopause comforter that is shorter on the wife’s side of the bed, so she can keep her feet uncovered and I don't have to freeze from the knees down.

Bank of Canada reduces policy rate by 50 basis points to 3¼%

The Bank of Canada today reduced its target for the overnight rate to 3¼%, with the Bank Rate at 3¾% and the deposit rate at 3¼%.

A potential relief for those facing mortgage renewal in 2025. 👍

This is the time of year when Brokerages release their rosie forecasts for the coming Spring. Remember that national forecasts often have very little value in predicting what will happen in your local market. Talk to people who work full time in the markets where you are looking.
