The Bluesky team is very small currently but they pack a mean punch. They are an impressive group led by rockstar CEO “Jay Graber”

One last thing, no bookmarks (yet), find the pin 📌 emoji on your device and the post will go to a pinned feed for curation

That’s all for now 😎

A few things. Currently videos can only be one minute long but that is expected to change.

You can’t mix videos and photos in the same post (yet) like on Twitter, an built in gifs have less content and variety.

You also can’t share content (yet) in DMs

The platform is constantly evolving

Bluesky also has a lot of 3rd party utilities that work w/ Bluesky’s API and unlike Twitter, you don’t have to pay for many to use or develop

Elon has all but eliminated third party development. It’s become a very closed system

I found this list 👇🏻

As mentioned, “Starter Packs”’are the bomb. There are many starter pack directories out to get you started. They’re searchable by any means you can think of

Topic, location etc

This is a great directory to get started with:

Twitter was the same for me in that I like to engage with those I follow. If they have great content, I repost it, quote post it, reply to it.

Don’t forget to like it too!

I find Bluesky to have much more meaningful and thoughtful content

It’s a bit slower than Twitter but quality > quantity

Before I follow someone back, I check to see what they’re posting and what they’re reposting.

If of interest to me and being worthy of amplification, I follow back almost every time.

If I see no activity or self serving or “me me me” type posts, I rarely follow back

Bluesky does not have an algorithm that promotes amplification of rage posting and similar negativity. You decide what you want to see via “feeds”.

My favourite feeds is the “follower” feed. A default feed where you see content of interest to those you follow

The best way to build followers and find others to follow are through “Starter Packs”

Like block lists, people have created lists of interesting people and accounts to follow. You fan follow all with one click, or selectively follow them one at a time, but you are in control over your audience

There are also “Block Lists” that other users create and you can subscribe to. Those are very effective are keeping trolls at bay.

On Twitter I am constantly under attack from trolls and blocking allows to still see my posts easily and come at me in other ways. On Bluesky, trolls go to die

To start with, moderation on Bluesky is way better. The admins are very receptive to ridding the platform of bots, trolls and other nefarious players.

Furthermore, Bluesky is self policing. Blocking is much stronger here and its possible to “self clean”’posts that are attacked by bad players

That took almost 4 years to grow. Today I have close to 2600 followers and there has been a recent surge since the inauguration earlier this week (while my Twitter count is declining again).

I love Bluesky! The followers here are more welcoming and far less toxic. Why is that?

Where to begin?

I had under a hundred followers on my political activism account after joining Bluesky on November 1, 2023 when it was still invitation only

Within hours of Trump being declared the winner on 11/5/24, my Twitter follower count dropped from a high of 2800 followers at its peak to 2109 today
