and even f'the middle-left, this is a constitutional coalition, which folks from the right part of this coalition get much better than the internecine left.

the fact that the people who were taken hostage are the considered the problem on this site for choosing one of several bad options while they still meaningfully control nothing in government is a huge win for people trying to prevent a mass middle-left coalition to get us over this.

way underrated how much the median elected republican position is to only fund the military and the border patrol and turns out that aligns with current tax income anyway so everything else falling apart is just no a problem. Dem states already mobilizing compacts and agreements to fill in.

It’d be like if the far right in Europe started to wine and dine leadership from Mississippi.

Republican paradox - too many senators who want to preserve the filibuster so they can extract concessions in the future (so no nuclear option majority) but few senators willing to accept even the most meager concessions now.

Kinda the point. It’s unlikely we are the audience. The political chattering classes refuse to admit republicans won’t compromise, can’t pass anything in the house for at least another 10 days if they did, and Dems are lobbing softballs.

but the plan seems to be make the dems queasy so they have to reopen government, then tell everybody the dems approved the very bad impending healthcare and other crises caused by this funding plan, so its not just the GOP's fault. You have to force the GOP to go nuclear in that situation.

but now the GOP is in a weird spot where they may not have the votes to go nuclear, because some senators want to preserve exactly this type of advantageous concession taking for when they are out of power, but those same senators won't force the issue on this set of admittedly small concessions.

the secondary point for something like this is that it should signal to the pundit class that the dems didn't ask for much (they frankly could ask for a ton!) and the GOP is just not interested in governing anymore. Pundits really are struggling to get that point.

the point of an incredibly low ask used to be on things like this (that are politically devastating for the GOP but maybe not something they want to do ideologically) is that they get the benefit of those concessions but blame dems for doing it. It used to be a win win.

It’s just as much to try to show pundits how insane republicans are right now. But they’re still struggling to see it.

I think the experience thing cut pretty deep. Especially with folks not as negatively polarized against BH as cuomo. But the executives race shows a bit more experience in office can go a long way. (In a bit more affable contest) But the council results in the bench is getting deeper.

Seemed like a mixed bag when council results are added in.

It’s a nonzero problem these supposed democratic supporting entities keep reinforcing caricatures instead of embracing how governing innovations might appeal widely. NYC is unique. But it’s had bad / milequost leadership for some time, largely supported by a broken machine.

I just want to understand why this is a unique problem for democrats given the innumerable unpopular things elected republicans have done / endorsed. I think it’s that this group wants to pay for media, now conservative dominated, instead of starting to think of building infrastructure. That’s hard

These people just have no idea about scale or who is responsible for what. You’re trying to be gov. If one of your struggling cities tried something you should embrace it. Innovation is good. Not just be a jerk. How can even the most experienced pols fall for these caricatures again and again.

and local politics, in turn, flows from that. it should also sus out weird creatures with interesting back stories too - why did Sinema actually want to represent Arizona? what was that? The exception being Braddock, but maybe the inability to extend that to the full state tells the whole story.
