Hollow Knight is so SOTN that they made Hornet glide backward when you first change directions like Alucard
November 16, 2025 at 10:32 PM
That one was really wild to me lol. Hollow Knight is Symphony of the Night to a T. The only major wrinkle it adds to the Igavania formula is soulslike death mechanics

but I do think that Samus' gender is an actual integral part of her character, and she's probably my favorite woman in any video game.

And my love of Samus was probably crucial for me accepting that I'm trans in some way I haven't puzzled out yet lol
November 16, 2025 at 9:34 PM
Jokes aside. I sympathize with people who balk at the statements of the Japanese devs, especially in light of Nintendos past treatment of Samus and other female characters,
November 16, 2025 at 9:34 PM
Basically what I'm trying to get at is that Samus isn't just a toku hero, she's also probably the sickest magical girl of all time
November 16, 2025 at 9:31 PM
I don't see it as a coincidence then that Samus is the only woman we see or hear of in the main series (let's pretend Other M doesn't exist). I think it makes perfect sense to tie that sensibility to her gender. That's her source of power, to me.
November 16, 2025 at 9:31 PM
In the world of Metroid, Samus is a hero because she's apparently the only person who can see the value in saving a life without trying to instrumentalize it. Neither the Chozo, the Federation, nor the Pirates can resist using the metroids for dubious ends or else exterminating them.
November 16, 2025 at 9:31 PM
If any part of Metroid is feminist, it's in the ways motherhood is monstered, instrumentalized, and othered by the male-dominated factions of the series. As of Fusion, Samus is the new embodiment of that monstrous motherhood, allowing us retrospective identification with others like her.
November 16, 2025 at 9:17 PM
It presents a contradiction. I think Samus is a cool power fantasy, but I find her interesting because she's so much more than just a female version of Master Chief or Boba Fett.
November 16, 2025 at 9:08 PM
When people want to say that Metroid is feminist because Samus is a stone cold badass, they often valorize the exact behavior that the Metroid series criticizes in Samus.
November 16, 2025 at 9:08 PM
This isn't to say Metroid doesn't have feminist potential; I think Fusion in particular really benefits from a feminist lens. I just don't want to give Nintendo credit they don't deserve.
November 16, 2025 at 9:00 PM
Her body is commodified just as much as any other woman in a video game. I won't even get into the mess that is Other M.
November 16, 2025 at 9:00 PM
My other pet peeve with Metroid is when people try to say that it's feminist because Samus is a girlboss. I love Metroid but I don't really buy into its alleged feminist legacy bc your reward for beating it quickly is a striptease from Samus.

Just compare the narrative of Metroid Prime 2 to Metroid 2. Despite being the two most harsh and alienating games in the series, the difference between Samus' role in those games is night and day. Samus is the fucking villain in Metroid 2. Whereas in Prime 2 she's an altruistic savior
November 16, 2025 at 8:26 PM
If anything, the Prime games made by the American devs show us much more of the "motherly guardian" side of Samus than the 2D games made by the Japanese devs.
November 16, 2025 at 8:26 PM
And Samus knows this. She's humbled at the beginning of Fusion. She's ready to die to rectify her mistakes at the end. Samus decided to let the baby metroid live not because she was possessed by her womb or whatever but bc she's human. And murdering a baby in cold blood is pretty low, even for her
November 16, 2025 at 8:18 PM
When she tries to give the baby Metroid away, the Galactic Federation immediately tries to extract power from it the exact same way the Space Pirates do, which ends in the creation of the BSL research station
November 16, 2025 at 8:18 PM
Metroid 2-4 are all dedicated to exploring the consequences of this type of behavior. The X parasite is a direct consequence of Samus destroying the ecosystem of an entire planet.
November 16, 2025 at 8:18 PM
My real pet peeve with the popular conception of Samus' character is that she must be a cold-hearted killer bc she's stoic and badass and look what happened when Other M tried to complicate that. But that's never been the case
November 16, 2025 at 8:18 PM
one could just as easily imagine the Prime games taking place after Super and before Fusion if their entire placement didn't hinge on the absence of metroids from the universe post-Return of Samus
November 16, 2025 at 8:04 PM
Obviously the Prime games throw a wrench in this but the closer you look at the series the more you realize they throw a wrench in everything, really; Prime 1 was intended to be a reboot anyway. I know they're canon but for the purpose of analysis I'm content to think of it as a gaiden
November 16, 2025 at 7:58 PM
It's like a pivot from lawful neutral to chaotic good
November 16, 2025 at 7:55 PM
i like to imagine Samus post-Metroid 2 as a reformed self-interested amoral bastard. It was through contact with the other that she changed. She becomes alienated from society literally and biologically because of her pursuit of justice for the metroids
