And for anyone wondering about what it would feel like if an asteroid roughly the size of the 2024 YR4 hit you head on - here, in full, is that cheery prognosis I mention in the piece from Kim Aaron, chief engineer for architecture and formulation at NASA's Jet Propulsion lab.
An answer on Quora from Kim Aaron, dated several months before 2024 YR4 was discovered, in response to a - coincidental - question about an asteroid around its size. "It would look like a bright light in pretty much a fixed spot in the sky and it would get very bright very quickly. You would not sense it as something approaching you, it would just look like a really bright light in the sky. It would quickly become very painful to look towards it (like looking at the sun, but worse). It might be bright enough to make you go blind. This would last a few seconds. Then you'd be dead. You wouldn't hear anything. You wouldn't feel anything. The actual obliteration of your body would be much faster than the speed of signals getting to your brain by nerves, so you would not perceive any of that."
