when the GDR supported, during the drafting of Protocols in 1977, African efforts to exclude mercenaries from being recognized as combatants or POWs, it simultaneously sought to ensure that same restrictions would not expose socialist states’ military advisers globally to same exclusionary forces.

interesting - wasn't aware that, during their trials in the mid-1970s, the Baader-Meinhof group defendants - while on hunger strike - claimed POW status under the Third Geneva Convention, asserting existence of armed conflict within FRG.
