Folian Biology Flowers • Every folian is derived from a specific type of flower, determined by genetics. • Visually, their flower type most often changes the type of leaves and flowers that grow in place of their hair. Sometimes, it can affect other aspects of their appearance, such as skin color or height. • Flower type does not affect whether or not two folia can reproduce, regardless of whether their flowers are a different species, genus, or even family. Reproduction between different flower types usually results in the child having just one of the parents’ flowers. ◦ Very, very rarely, reproduction between different flower types can create new species of flower that otherwise cannot occur in nature. Since folian flowers do not spread or reproduce in the same ways that typical plants do, these species only exist in these folia. • Folian flowers that are safe to eat in the wild are also safe to eat when obtained from folia, provided the individual folian the flower grew from is healthy. Additionally, folian flowers are capable of producing fruits, which can also be edible. Physical Attributes • Folia have leaves in place of hair. The size and shape of the leaves is entirely dependent on their flower type. Folian flowers typically only grow in spots where leaves grow. • Folian irises are either pigmented or non-pigmented. Non-pigmented irises are the same color as folian sap, a dark greenish-yellow. Pigmented folia have irises colored by the same pigments that give their flowers color. ◦ Only around 10% of folia have pigmented eyes. ◦ Folia with pigmented eyes have tetrachromatic vision, being able to see four colors rather than three. Sex Characteristics • Folia primarily reproduce sexually, but do not get pregnant or give birth. Instead, their flowers produce seeds which, when planted, will grow underground over the course of approximately three years, emerging from the soil when ready. ◦ Folian flowers have the same reproductive organs of regular flowers, but are sterile and are only capable of producing folian seeds. • Folian morphology and sex characteristics are based on those of their flower type. While often complex, most folia fall into one of three categories that determine their sex: dioecious, monoecious, and synoecious. ◦ Sex characteristics of dioecious folia are the same as humans, generally being either male or female with occasional exceptions (Occurring roughly the same amount as in humans). ▪ The sex of all of the individual folian’s flowers match that of the folian. ▪ Dioecious folia are the least common of the main three types, as only around 6% of flowers are dioecious. ◦ Monoecious folia have both male and female reproductive organs on both their bodies and all of their flowers. Other sex characteristics (breasts, figure, etc) generally work similar to dioecious folia, being primarily male or female. ◦ Synoecious folia have a mix of male and female flowers, and a mix of sex characteristics seen in other humans and folia. ◦ While some flowers can be sexless, folia cannot. Folia whose flower types are sexless generally have sexless flowers and either monoecious or synoecious bodies. ▪ Folia with sexless flowers are disproportionately more likely to identify on the asexual and/or non-binary spectrum. ▪ Folia with sexless flowers can reproduce both sexually and asexually. However, asexual reproduction in folia is often highly stigmatized. Diet & Energy • Folia are considered mixotrophs1, primarily relying on photosynthesis for energy, but eating as both a way to gain nutrients plants would typically get from soil, and as a source of energy at times where photosynthesis is not viable or effective to survive. • Folia are much more sensitive to toxins, pH imbalances, and dietary imbalances than humans. • Alcohol and caffeine are highly toxic to most folia. They can generally have caffeine in limited quantities, but ingesting even small amounts of alcohol can cause serious damage to their bodies.2 ◦ A delicacy among folia is a ‘folian latte’, a drink consisting of primarily milk and a very small amount of coffee3. While the ingredients to make it are cheap, it cannot be legally prepared or sold without a license and can only be served to adults. ◦ The effect of 10mg of caffeine for an average folian is roughly equivalent to that of around 200mg for an average human. ◦ Folia whose flowers produce caffeine in nature are typically more resistant to caffeine, but still have a weaker tolerance than humans. ◦ Folia with higher resistance to acidity may also have slightly higher tolerance toward caffeine, as the pH imbalance caused by the acidity of caffeine is one of the major concerns. General/Additional Information • Folia, like other creatures in the Novaplantae kingdom, originated as their ordinary animal counterpart. Generational exposure to the [Redacted] over millions of years is believed to have interfered with their evolution. ◦ Species believed to be descended from/altered by the [Redacted] are not considered plants or animals, instead belonging to their own kingdom as they all display certain qualities that are otherwise mutually exclusive to each. (Page footnotes) 1. A mixotroph is an organism that gets energy from multiple sources, in this case being autotrophic and heterotrophic. A real life example of this would be the Venus flytrap. 2. This is partially why prohibition was never repealed in America/Nuciferia. Cases of alcohol poisoning in folia were commonly used in favor of anti-alcohol arguments. 3. Legally, upper limit of 5mg of caffeine per 250mL of milk, no more than 20mg of caffeine in a single beverage.
