I realized that while I’d heard the Mission:Control! stuff a _lot_ (every DC area show from show 1 in '97 to early 2000, plus a few in other places), the only times I'd heard the Identikit material live was two LA area shows the week of 9/11.

So glad you got to see this! We didn’t get Back of Love at BFF in Vegas in Oct, but otherwise similar set. My wife heard J playing the riff to A Song With No Words when they sound checked that morning, but maybe it’s just a warmup move (?). It was so great to hear those songs live again.

I agree, but with band already mixed to stereo on 4-track cassette I wasn’t going be dragging that sound out. :-) I’ve always chosen to remember it as a reminder that it’s ok let something steal focus or obscure something else in a mix at times.

A deeply rockist version of this from my past: guitarist asks for the solo to be louder, I turn it up a bit and he say “No, a LOT louder. When Angus Young takes a solo, does anyone give a fuck what the kick drum is doing?” :-)

Another thank you for mentioning the LA show at the right moment!

I remember reading the book at the height of my (pre music) submarine obsession and digging it. Never seen the movie.

I can confirm this was their first show.

3 of these 7 are in my…top 30 (?) records. (Honestly, I have no clue about the numbers, I just like them a lot :-)

I remember making a RealAudio clip from that Compound Red album for the DeSoto web site. I can’t remember why they couldn’t do it themselves—maybe the encoder only ran on Windows or they didn’t have ripping software? Something even quainter than _wanting_ a RealAudio clip anyway. :-)

I have one of that fails occasionally, only after parking the car inside on a hot day. An hour later, it works perfectly. Actually, that reminds me it’s been about an hour…and yep, closed fine. :-(

IIRC the Dismemberment Plan opened—it was the first time I saw them.

Thank you _SO_ much for doing so! I’d resigned myself to not seeing them but this made me look at when exactly they were playing and thus I discovered that they’re playing LA and got
tix. Yes!

I ran into Rich Harrison, the producer/collaborator on that, at an LA bar a few years back. Cool dude and a real character—when he found out I grew up in the DC area we talked about go-go for a bit. Had to work to get some of his resume out of him, he was pretty humble about what he’s done.

Earlier this year I reconnected one of them with (digital transfers of) some of their master tapes from ‘87. Didn’t know them, long story how I ended up with the tapes, but it felt good to help get those recordings where they belong.

So sorry my friend. May her memory be eternal.

A friend who was my roommate when Let It Be came out will start singing this any time I mention anyone named Gary. 40+ years of hilarity. :-)

It allows you to get what’s good from “Cat Scratch Fever” w/o having to listen to the Nuge.

You’re allowed to assume the absolute worst of anyone driving one of those pieces of shit. I don’t make the rules.

These are objectively excellent cats.

100% agree

And don’t forget the 3rd author—Carlos Alomar. By all accounts it’s his riff.

When I first moved out on my own, I bought Hunky Dory and listened to Life On Mars? every morning for about a year.

They’re certainly rarer, but according to isitbandcampfriday.com the next one is March 7.
Is it Bandcamp Friday?
Is it?
