A beautiful collaboration with the Accardi and Robertson labs is out! Using a battery of structural/biophysical techniques, we show that CLC-ec1 undergoes large-scale, pH-dependent structural changes - we propose this underlies common gating. Read below!

Incredible analysis on the emergence of new transport function in sodium- and proton-coupled transporters using ancestral sequence reconstruction, cryo-EM, and activity assays. Turns out the proposed ancestors do not need to use cations at all!
